Reflective writing practice

Reflective writing practice
Scenario 1
What happened
I was out on a shoot in Nottingham to film a music video, the performers turned up 1hour late that cost me £20 as I have to pay for the green screen studio p/hr. we then took out the green screen and film on a black background as this was the only way to get the video done since I couldn’t book out the green screen because I didn’t have any money left.
When I got back to the computer I found that the footy with the green screen was badly lit and the footage with the black background was properly lit and useable although there wasn’t enough footage.

Feelings
I felt annoyed that the artist turned up late, which in result ruined the entire production.

Evaluation
The experience was good and allowed me to learn from the mistake and make the video even better next time I do one.
Analysis
I found that I should arrange meet ups 1/hr earlier than expected, to make sure we are ready to go shoot.
Conclusion
I could have done nothing to prevent this.
Action plan
If this were to happen again I would have a back up plan to accompany the situation.

Scenario 2
What happened
I went to film a documentary and i took a camera that I have never used before with me, I filmed for most of the day and decided to go home early as thought I had enough footage. When I got back I found that the majority of the footage was out of focus and dark.

Feelings
I felt annoyed that the footage wasn’t how I wanted it to look. And that this could lower my grade.
Evaluation
The experience was bad because the un-ascetically pleasing footage would ruin my grade. The good thing was that I now know what not to do and how to prevent is next time.
Analysis
I found that I should have asked how to use the camera before heading out to shoot with it.
Conclusion
I could have asked how to use the camera or looked online fore how it works. Taken a ND filter [neutral density filter] to lower the brightness of the overexposed areas. Don’t shoot into the sun…
Action plan
Colour correction/brightness and contrast… or take filters with me/ don’t shoot into the sun.

Programme Title: unit 22 .2 – Haiku – Vimeo Project

Producer and/or Director:

Chevy Thompson

Chevytmedia.blogspot.com

Duration:

17 seconds

Audience:

Online-film critiques and film enthusiasts.

The online film community has built upon Vimeo to use it simplicity and efficiency to gather views and opinions on filmmakers work from around the globe. These ‘weekend assignment’ have become very popular for Indie filmmakers to get their work seen and is a perfect audience to target my film at. Age’s range from students aged 16-19 to adults, these two groups despite their age and experience levels are able to learn from and feed of each other’s talent easily.

What is it about?

The video features a tutorial for making tea – the idea came from the origin of the haiku art form with it's creating being makers of tea I wanted the film to have a strong feel towards it's history.

Within the video there will be a soundtrack instrumental played using kitchen utensils this will add to the comedic effect of the video making it more enjoyable to watch rather than having no music at all.

There will be 3 shots the first 5 seconds in length, the second 7 and the third 5. Each giving a visual demonstration of what to do next during the making of the tea.

-The first show dolly horizontally across the table top showing the ingredients needed for the drink.

-The second shot will be a static shot showing the ingredients going into the tea pot.

-The final shot will be a diagonal track shot of the person pouring the tea into the mugs.

Suggested Elements:

The main elements within the video are:

    1. The types of shots used: I want the video to much like a cookery show style of film making, using slow steady pans, tilts and static shots allowing the audience to visual see what is happening without allot of distraction. All shots will be close ups which are the best way of giving the audience a true observational perspective of what is happening, letting them only concentrate on the products needed for the drink.

  1. Bright colours: Bright colours are a great way to attract attention and make a scene feel more welcoming and inviting, Dull colours will prevent the audience from continuing to view or to not click on the video thumbnail at all. - To create this I will be using table-lamp to help light my scene which bulb gives of a warm red/orange light.

  2. Educational: people like to learn from videos on the internet and if they are short it is even batter. By including a tutorial into a creative video it also adds uniqueness.

Shooting Days:

Thursday – at around 12-3 this is when the light from the sun will be able to give it's golden glow through my kitchen window giving me the desired look.

Research - unit 22 .2 - Haiku

Research into Haiku Video

This project involves creating a Haiku in the form of a video.

Definition – Haiku : A Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five.

I have looked at various videos within the Haiku Vimeo weekend project group/YouTube to get ideas and inspiration for what is meant to be done. This is the one i liked to most.

I really like the use of shots with this video as they fit along perfectly with the words and could also be understood without the use of words or voice over.

The first shot with the arms in the air represent life being created as such a person coming into the world and being held up. I like this because the use of a partially blurry image to show a person unaware of where they are, the bright rim glow around the highlights also represent life in away a persons eyes have to adjust to the bright light when they come out the womb.

The use of shape is very organic suggesting there is no form or order as they are irregular. Organic shapes are comforting, pleasing and interesting adding individuality. - suggesting everyone human is different.

The second image with the train track is very well framed as it suggest two things which fit with the haiku, it suggests the human race striving to create new technology [the train tracks] as well as strive to carry on creating new technology, I think this is particularly shown by the use of a parallel objects within the frame such as the train-tacks, the path and the trees. Another iconic object within the scene is the golden light at the end of the path this has strong connotations and a new beginning.

I looked into visual grammar a form of audience manipulation through the use of shapes within any kind of image.

[I took extracts of information from this links below]

http://www.vanseodesign.com/web-design/visual-grammar-shapes/

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/parallel

  • Circles - Circles protect, they endure, they restrict. They confine what’s within and keep things out. They offer safety and connection. Circles suggests community, integrity, and perfection.

  • Parallel lines represent movement, leading and equality. Lines that cross create angles which would suggest diverse and separation and wouldn't be ideal for this use of shot.

I really like the last part of the [circles] extract {Circles suggests community, integrity, and perfection.} as I think it represents the human race like I was saying before about us trying to create new technologies which we can only do by communication and the need for perfection. This I why I like the use of the circle with the two parallel lines leading up to it.

Parallel lines represent movement, leading and equality. Lines that cross create angles which would suggest diverse and separation and wouldn't be ideal for this use of shot.

The final shot within the video of the graveyard is framed parallel just the the shot before it suggesting equality of the people and the film-makers feelings towards the people buried there. The lyrics for this shot from the haiku state: “to not be forgot” this ties in very well with the lyric before it: “And we will strive to create” emphasising the human races passion for creation of new things in order to be remembered.

Overall

I think this Video is a strong statement of a large audience.

Haiku - unit 22.2 - Ideas

Ideas – Haiku – unit 22 .2

Idea 1- Tea

What it is about:

This idea involves a tutorial for making tea and the haiku words will feature the instructions/recipe.

The first shot will feature a dolly/pan across the table to establish the ingredients needed for the recipe. I thought this type of shot was better than using a wide establishing shot because it allows the audience/viewer to see the objects in shot close up allowing them to actually concentrate on the objects I want them to see.

The second shot will feature the preparation of the tea using a solid close-up shot allowing the viewer to see a practical demonstration of what they need to do next.

The third and final shot will feature the pouring of the tea into the mugs with a messy tea table visibility seen to give the true feel and character of the process.

I want the video to have an audio sound track to help with the motion and flow with the video. I have found an audio track on youtube which features a instrumental created through the use of kitchen implements, I think this will be perfect good for the video as it is very suitable for the genre of video by matching its contents and instruments.

Inspiration for idea:

Inspiration for the idea came from the history behind haiku and it’s pioneers being the founders of Tea – although my video will be the British take on tea and haiku

What it should represent:

the video should represent a very simple but innovative take on Haiku – by being different compared to other
Haiku video by actually giving information.

Idea 2 – candle/fire

What it is about:

This video will feature shot of Chinese/Japanese style ornaments – i.e. candle, flowers, liquid air fresheners and sculptures.

The video will feature shots that collaborate with the lyrics to the haiku.

-The unending flame
-Fire is warm and burns with life
-Until it is quenched

I want the first shot to feature the fuelling if the liquid freshener as the first line of the haiku represents the eternal life such as feeding the flame.

I want the second shot to show all three ornaments with a pan shot in a 150 degrees motion. Showing the object in full life as the second sentence suggests.

The third shot will feature the flames of the candles dieing out as if all the fuel/life has been used up.

What it should mean:

I want the idea to represent a very historical feel to the Japanese culture. Using such connotations as calming music, ornaments and bright warm colours.

Vimeo project - unit 22 .3 - The final video -local tour

Reviewing edit /evaluation - Local tour - Unit 22

Reviewing edit /evaluation

Local tour – Vimeo – unit 22

Day 1 September - September 19th 2011

During day 1 I captured all the footage/footage of my card.

I then opened up Final Cut Studio and tested out a few pieces of music to a rough edit. I then began to put my footage into the timeline and edit, i found that allot of the footage i filmed was not going to be used so i went through and chose the footage with the most meaning. I.e.: the boy looking over the wall at the water fall, i thought it was great how people come to look over at the waterfall and relax. i kept the sound of the water rather loud to represent a persons problems being cleansed or washed away.

Another shot i chose to keep becuase of meaning was the very first "Derby wheel shot" i like to think it represented the cycle of a daily night in Derby i tried to make this clear throughout the video by using 'Derby big wheel' shots continuous as the video progressed as if the video was the entire length of the night.

During the production my only memory card fast enough for recording footage filled up and i wanted to go out and get some last minute shots. i then came across this video

and thought how brilliant light-drawing looks as video and how interesting it is to show people around a location, i then got my camera and took multiple long exposures from the same position to create 'moving image'.

whilst editing i used two of these types of video-drawings. the first one was to introduce people into the city as the lines of the road represent travelling, entering / the fast paced blurry lines made the shot look calm and exciting as people are when going out during the night. The second use of this technique was to show people being unaware of things around them [being drunk] or the night has gone so fast and they've enjoyed it so much it's all been a blur, i added sound effects of traffic to represent people going home and getting in other peoples way after a night out.

The final shots are time-lapse of the main intercity-traffic junction represent people coming and going into the city as if it happened so quickly, i also used ramping [gradually slowing and speeding up footage] to give the shot a very unusual look and make out that things are very unique during night time.

The final shot of the Taxi's is to exit the video as people genuinely use this mode of transport to get back home and i felt was a good way to show this as there was more than one taxi as if the drivers are waiting as it's there normal daily routine.

Music

i chose a mixed beat piece of music as it was made by a documentary composer called Simon Wilkinson - this particular piece of music has very Blade Runner Type dramatic beats and ambient hums which i think is perfect for a night time based exterior video as it gives the calm but mildly dramatic ambience which is usually the connotations with night time based films.

i also like how the song has beats which happen only now and again as i gives the video suspense and randomness which lines up with how a persons night out may happen.

The use of slow cuts and slow music is to allow people who have never seen the city before get and understanding of where things are, this is why i used the 'Big wheel' as a symbolic icon of central and allow people to reference how far or close they are away from shot locations.

Review of 16/09/2011 – 5pm/10pm shoot

Positive points

The shoot went well during the times [5pm -7pm] with only light showers as the weather report predicted. Although there was a time when it got heavier and had to stop shooting for a while.

The locations turned out better than expected as there was a few evening events going on in the square/quad such as the Derby Big-wheel which I didn't know was in town, which made a lot of the shoots look more interesting as it represented how far away from the centre I was as well as how active the central area was, this helped my theme of inner and outer city more visual to the audience.

The other location that was more interesting than what I was expecting was the Derwent river which had a good representation of division between the inner and outer city as one side was more simple with trees and walkways while the other was busy with construction sites, larger buildings, bright lights and more people.

As the evening got darker it allowed me to get more interesting shots since the bright lights within the city stood out more and gave the footage a mellow/exciting mood. This is a good way of showing the entertainment venues at their peak because most of them only open in the evening or at night.

Negative points

The only problem within the night was most of the venues don't start to gather people until after 8/9pm so it was hard fining ones where people begun to populate, I wanted a large amount of people to gather around evening venues to make the city look like it was busy/faced paced and popular at night, although I did try to combat the lack of people by shooting the same location from multiple angles and using two shots one being and establishing shot and the other a close up of the venue and people, these techniques helped give the illusion that there were more people just by the use of using two shots instead of one.

Ideas - unit 22 .2 - local tour

Ideas – unit 22 – local tour

Idea 1: City nightlife

What its about:

The video is compiled of two montages that will later be edited to intercept with one another.

One montage sequence will feature the inner-city at night whilst the other will feature the outer-city at night.

The two montages will feature shots of each area along with 3rd party audio and sound FX to give the environment it’s own characteristic’s. The footage will be shot in the Derby city centre and it’s local surroundings during a busy night {Friday night-Saturday night}. This is the best time to capture the activities of a city during night-time since there are so many social events happening and will allow me to capture the contrast between the both environments.

Inspiration for idea:

Walking home through the town centre on a Saturday night and seeing how the city changes as you walk through it, the centre being really load and crowded whist the suburbs are gentle and silent. This high contrast gave me an idea of what it would be like to see them side-by-side and how different the two ‘civilisations’ look.

What it should represent:

This video should represent how to close differences are in many parts of the world although it’s on a smaller scale the meaning still stands [ie: Richer parts of a country really close to poorer parts of the country]

This video will also personify each environment giving them human characteristics such as gentle, happy, exciting, lively, boring, peaceful, energetic ect:

Idea 2: Heatherton village

What it is about:

Heatherton village is considered a wealthy part of Derby and also beautiful as it sits so close to the south of Derby touching [Findern a village] this means that it has plenty of farms, river streams, gardens and pathways. This allows the area to have a very unique look compared to the rest of Derby and has made me think of how it would look if shot artistically as it is an area that has a completely different feel compared to the rest of Derby.

Inspiration for idea:

My inspiration for this idea, is received from the perception of Derby being a very generic city with a lot of Urban based aspects such as; shopping centres, cinemas, restaurants ect: although there are smalls parts which are more rural I would like to show them on film as this area interests’ me.

What it should represent:

I would like the video to represent a peaceful, tranquil place to simulate the Garden of Eden. I am aiming to create the area in a dreamy surreal look with a golden glow. Shooting towards the sun with simulates this effect [using glare and lens flares] but you have to be careful not to silhouette the background objects.

The dreamy effect will make the environment look very different to the generic ‘dull and boring repetitious city’ which people perceive Derby to be.

Idea 3- home tour facts

What it is about:

The video will feature my or someone else’s home shot in a futuristic way by using after effects/motion to create overlay graphic interfaces [look at image below for details]

using simple pans, tracks and tilts around a location whilst graphical interfaces display information, upbeat music will be playing into background to improve the pace of the information being feed into people as well as to keep them interested and engaged.

Music will also help increase the dramatic value of receiving a shocking fact.

Although I will be using the same techniques in this video I will not be copying it, I will try to give my own take by giving factual information, explaining where objects came from, what materials they are made from and their main characteristics .

I think this will allow people to see where different types of products come from by giving people factual information on what they can do .i:e [produces 3kw of electricity a day or aerosol nozzle projects at 200mph]. The main suggested element of the video is the shock factor effect giving people information on things they may not know about which may be in their homes.

Inspiration for idea:

Seeing multiple videos with this effect such as:

Concrete Circus - Keelan Phillips BMX - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnA_SwHRlHI

Room Tech Tour - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KAZ0teKTVI

I think the use of this effect gives a lot of information to the viewer in a simple yet visually interesting way, and would like to emulate that ease into factual video.

What it should represent:

The video should represent a very different approach to factual documentary by choosing a subject which will involve almost all the population.

The video could also be apart of a series where different locations are shown each time giving even more facts but in different environments I.e: Home, Garden/parks, car manufacturings, schools, hospitals or around a capital city.

Chevytmedia.blogspot.com

Duration:

1-2 minutes

The video will feature montage style shots of derby city centre at night in no particular order or form. The video will feature the hectic busy nightlife of derby with bright lights and social mediums also the not so chaotic side of the city at night such as the [river gardens, un- chaotic motorways, the bridges that look over Derwent river, inter city attractions such as Quad, Cathedral, assembly square and Pride park.]
My ideal perception of what I want the video to project is the contrast of the two environments during the Night-time in which people would not normally see.

Night time inner city lifestyle – bright light, lots of people, exciting atmosphere.

Night time outer city lifestyle – low lighting, peaceful, cool colours.

Suggested Elements:

Elements included within the film - A contrast of two different atmosphere’s and environments. Allowing the audience to witness both simultaneously, which will evoke unusual reactions.
The aim of the video is to personify each environment by giving them both their own characteristic’s – inner city being the lively, energetic person and outer city being the peaceful, relaxed person.

Audio and Sound FX will be played over the silent footage to help give these characteristics towards the environments in a more simple way this will instantly give information about the two environments without use of words or text.

Shooting Days:

Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Thursday Sunday = Local village idea – for sunny weather
Saturday Friday = Derby at night idea – for night time social activities

I have looked at the local weather report for my days of shooting a have discovered that

  • My idea 2 shooting days has more realistic shooting environments than my idea 1 shooting days due to the wet weather.

[this may mean i have to use another idea.]

Local Tour - 360 stairs from dyak on Vimeo.

Local Tour - 360 stairs

This video is one of my favourites from the group because the way the music collaborates perfectly at the beginning with the establishing shots, by slowly gathering it's pace and rhythm for the main scene in the video.

This section is edited with very fast and snappy shots to make you feel a big burst of excitement and energy and this is maintained by the fast pace of the background song.

There is also a symbolic connection throughout the video by the use of low angles looking up at the building in the beginning, the long hike up the stairwell and the bright white light fade as the video ends and they reach the top. To me this represents connotations to “the stairway to heaven”, low angles used with slow paced music allows the viewers to understand what they are attempting to do clearly as-well as represent how high and what vast scale it is on.

The use of POV shots during the adventures hike puts us in their line of sight and allows us to experience their actions personal experiences.
The bright light at the end just before entering the door has mental connotations of them -reaching heaven's gateway- they could have cut the video to an end when they were on top of the building looking over but it wouldn't give the same feel/effect and would lessen the mental message of the video by making their personal feelings after the hike exposed and not open for question.

unit 22 .2 - local tour - Contingency plans

Contingency plans

One of my videos involves filming at night time in low light conditions, I have looked into the equipment I’ll be using and it is very limited for a night shoot as no optional lighting will be available to be used. I have looked into how the 'Flip' camera preforms in low light conditions and am very impressed and think it will be able do the task which sufficient exposure although this is a risk and something may go wrong.

To combat this I will be thoroughly planning two video ideas. This will allow me to have a back up plan if anything does go wrong.

To preform the task correctly the first time I will aim to shot into areas with lighting not away from them. Another choice is to invest in some form of torch or portable lighting solution which may make all the difference in the final output.
