Idea 1 – Sponsored Skateboarder from Nottingham
What its about:
The video will feature Elliot Maynard a sponsored skater from Nottingham who has just recently been sponsored by his local skate shop [non-stop skates].
The video will be very similar to a video segment called “abberican me” which is featured on ‘The Berrics’ [a skateboarding video site]

"Documentary mode is a conceptual scheme developed by American documentary theorist Bill Nichols that seeks to distinguish particular traits and conventions of various documentary film styles" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Documentary_mode). The modes are: [Information from] {http://www.mediaknowall.com/as_alevel/Documentary/docu_index.php}
Poetic mode: follows subjective of it's subject, they also usually recall historical events in which events may be reenacted to visually show an interpretation.
Observational mode: this style is very much fly on the wall where as documentarist film an event or situation as it happens with out any planing.
Participatory mode: The interviewer and interviewee are both seen during the documentary, the documentary film-maker connects with the subject gaining and asking them questions.
Reflexive mode: the documentary acknowledges the presence of the viewer, the film also demonstrates consciousness of the process of the documentary.
Performative mode: acknowledges the emotional and subjective aspects of documentary as well as presence of the filmmaker as they encounter subjects and give them their thoughts in which the audience gains their own thoughts and feelings often to cause argument
My film will likely fall under the heading of 'expository' as voice overs will be presented over a variety of footage which relates to what is being said also voice overs may be used to shed light on an idea or argue against a theory.
Inspiration for idea:
I make skateboarding videos for fun as much as possible, I also make videos which have no connection to skateboarding for college and with other people. I’ve always wanted to combine the two styles to create something for the two audience's.
By knowing the conventions of skateboarding videography i.e. skateboarding is filmed in documentary style it is not scripted nor is it acted out. Skateboard videographers don't usually plan what they want they just film/document the event's becuase skateboarding has a low trick landing susses rate.
In this video you an tell that things are planned by the way they include miss-lands.
Another convention is following the skateboarder by never letting them leave the frame, videos would often feature [B-roll] in which artistic shots are used to show preparation for a trick [2:50 - 2:52] or a event that may happened during the their time at a location i.e. sunsets/ busy traffic and people time lapses [5:10 -5:14] they are usually also used as interceptions in which a change of location or video flow has advanced i.e. at [5:10 - 5:14] the video shows a sunset after this the footage is filmed at night this visual connection is small but allows the audience to follow the story/journey along.
I also know conventions cinematic film-making such as: Rule of Thirds, low angle, high angle, wide shot and Close up, this allows me to create emotions which may be given from the subject. Using certain shots to enhance what they may be saying/feeling, knowing this allows me to produce something pleasing for both audiences.
This is a film/biographical short i would like my video to be like with the use of voice over and handheld shots i want to do this because it suites the view on skateboarding i am try to portray to the audience which is being creative, thinking different, expressing yourself and individuality which is what skateboarding represents to me personally.
Idea 2 – Guitarist from Derby
What its about:
Ethan Fitzgerald a Guitarist from Derby will be shown touring us around his home and showing his memorabilia and influences.
The video will follow the expository mode of documentary with voice-over from Ethan explaining where he got his passion from and what has influenced him ect:
Inspiration for idea:
This idea came from knowing Ethan personally to be very enthusiastic about what he does as well as an interesting person with a lot to say. This video might also help to get Ethan noticed more with the music community.
Idea 3 – Skateboard Photographer
What its about:
The documentary will follow the life of Sam Mlot a Skateboard Photographer from Derby. The video will feature him talking about his favourite people and events he has shot photos of in the skateboard community, it will also feature him talking about how he got into shooting skateboard photos and where he wants to progress.
Inspiration for idea:
I have gone on trips all over the uk with Sam to document skateboarding and would like to see how he views it since we both do very similar things. I would also like to see why he does it and who else in the skateboard media world inspires him.
