Production review - unit 22 .3 - handmade portrait

Reviewing edit

Pre – production

The pre-production was very smooth running since I had ideas previously in my head in which I wanted to do. I started by researching into different types of biographical videos such as [Abberican me, the handmade portrait group on Vimeo and http://jorisdebeij.com/] I found the videos on http://www.theberrics.com {Abberican me} and http://jorisdebeij.com/ the most helpful as they where very much into the style I wanted to go for, this includes following a subject around their local areas as I want them to feel comfortable in their natural surrounding.

After research I looked into locations for which to place interviews and film them do their chosen talent. I also tough of back up locations in which would be used if a problems were to occur such as wind/rain and loud noise.

Once completing these I wrote down my final ideas including research into videos in which I would like my project to emulate in a minor degree [Chaz Ortiz – Abberican me]

After these three main pieces were completed I finished of the remaining documents [call sheet, productions logs, health and safety assessment, budget sheet, treatment and treatment budget.

Treatment

The treatment overviews the entire production ideas and process including the suggested elements and what you want your video to provoke.

Production

The production went very well with no critical issues [minor issues were, having to move location to gain better audio quality]

The production rate went smoothly and everything went to schedule, we even had time to film more footage of him travelling around the city which gave the video a homely touch personal to Elliot Maynard since he likes to search around his city [Nottingham] for new places to skate.

I decided to film the skateboarding in the city centre early evening when the sun begins to go down and you get very harsh shadows and low luminance from lights within the city which I would call natural lighting since I have no control over them. I chose to do this because this is a very nice way to represent Elliot and Nottingham to make the centre look peaceful and inviting. The low warm glow from the orange/yellow lights makes for great bokeh [bokeh – an effect that is shown in images out of focus areas, usually from the lights within the background of an image. The hexagon shape is created from the light entering the camera senor but first having to hit the aperture that would be this hexagon shape.] Which gives the footage a mellow, chilled out mood since the warm colours invite the viewer into the environment and giving them a sense of being there. This is called documentary realism – the present effect it usually involves cinema techniques such as hand held use of camera, following the action and natural lighting ‘like I said beforehand’. These techniques are not only used in these locations but throughout the film but the Nottingham city centre is where they are most dominant.

post-production

The First shots where edited in a montage style showing multiple locations in one scene which is non-linear to give the viewer and introduction to who Elliot Maynard is and what he does. The scene involves his travelling around the city, skateboarding within the city and hanging around with friends. The final shot shows him do a trick in front of Nottingham market square building to show him in front of his local monument, the video then cuts on beat with text revelling his name, the name of the video and the first question where are you from? I believe this form of match on action [editing cuts on beat] adds impact to the build up of the big moment when the actual documentary begins. The music is a big part of my film as I believe it helps to link with the style of person Elliot is; young, upbeat and active. The long beat a the beginning is used to lengthen out the wait to make people anxious about when the video is going to start this is a good way of creating tensions which provokes the audiences mind into wanting to see the video even more.

Production log - unit 22 .3- Handmade portrait - 01/10/2011

Production log - Production – 02/10/2011

Today I filmed all of the footage needed for my video, the shoot went well and fit in with the planned schedule

Pros

  • schedule went to plan

  • footage turned out great

  • weather stayed good no rain at all

  • Talent turned up on time and was happy to answer any questions

Cons

  • wind outside was ruining audio [had no choice but to film interview inside a car park which echoed]

Reflection of the day

what happened

everything went well apart from audio issue which was resolved but not to plan.

Feelings

I felt annoyed of the audio/wind issue but was grateful for having a back up location very close.

Evaluation

I learned from a previous encounter with the same issue that having a back up location is the best thing available.

Action plan

Book out a dead-cat cover to help reduce wind noise

Book out another microphone to record the audio separate from behind some sort of wind shield.

Ideas - unit 22 .2 - Handmade portrait

Handmade portrait
Ideas
Idea 1 – Sponsored Skateboarder from Nottingham

What its about:

The video will feature Elliot Maynard a sponsored skater from Nottingham who has just recently been sponsored by his local skate shop [non-stop skates].
The video will be very similar to a video segment called “abberican me” which is featured on ‘The Berrics’ [a skateboarding video site]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ndOWrWDvB0
"Documentary mode is a conceptual scheme developed by American documentary theorist Bill Nichols that seeks to distinguish particular traits and conventions of various documentary film styles" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Documentary_mode). The modes are: [Information from] {http://www.mediaknowall.com/as_alevel/Documentary/docu_index.php}

Poetic mode: follows subjective of it's subject, they also usually recall historical events in which events may be reenacted to visually show an interpretation.

Observational mode: this style is very much fly on the wall where as documentarist film an event or situation as it happens with out any planing.

Participatory mode: The interviewer and interviewee are both seen during the documentary, the documentary film-maker connects with the subject gaining and asking them questions.

Reflexive mode: the documentary acknowledges the presence of the viewer, the film also demonstrates consciousness of the process of the documentary.

Performative mode: acknowledges the emotional and subjective aspects of documentary as well as presence of the filmmaker as they encounter subjects and give them their thoughts in which the audience gains their own thoughts and feelings often to cause argument

My film will likely fall under the heading of 'expository' as voice overs will be presented over a variety of footage which relates to what is being said also voice overs may be used to shed light on an idea or argue against a theory.

Inspiration for idea:

I make skateboarding videos for fun as much as possible, I also make videos which have no connection to skateboarding for college and with other people. I’ve always wanted to combine the two styles to create something for the two audience's.
By knowing the conventions of skateboarding videography i.e. skateboarding is filmed in documentary style it is not scripted nor is it acted out. Skateboard videographers don't usually plan what they want they just film/document the event's becuase skateboarding has a low trick landing susses rate.

In this video you an tell that things are planned by the way they include miss-lands.
Another convention is following the skateboarder by never letting them leave the frame, videos would often feature [B-roll] in which artistic shots are used to show preparation for a trick [2:50 - 2:52] or a event that may happened during the their time at a location i.e. sunsets/ busy traffic and people time lapses [5:10 -5:14] they are usually also used as interceptions in which a change of location or video flow has advanced i.e. at [5:10 - 5:14] the video shows a sunset after this the footage is filmed at night this visual connection is small but allows the audience to follow the story/journey along.

I also know conventions cinematic film-making such as: Rule of Thirds, low angle, high angle, wide shot and Close up, this allows me to create emotions which may be given from the subject. Using certain shots to enhance what they may be saying/feeling, knowing this allows me to produce something pleasing for both audiences.

This is a film/biographical short i would like my video to be like with the use of voice over and handheld shots i want to do this because it suites the view on skateboarding i am try to portray to the audience which is being creative, thinking different, expressing yourself and individuality which is what skateboarding represents to me personally.

Idea 2 – Guitarist from Derby

What its about:

Ethan Fitzgerald a Guitarist from Derby will be shown touring us around his home and showing his memorabilia and influences.
The video will follow the expository mode of documentary with voice-over from Ethan explaining where he got his passion from and what has influenced him ect:

Inspiration for idea:

This idea came from knowing Ethan personally to be very enthusiastic about what he does as well as an interesting person with a lot to say. This video might also help to get Ethan noticed more with the music community.

Idea 3 – Skateboard Photographer

What its about:

The documentary will follow the life of Sam Mlot a Skateboard Photographer from Derby. The video will feature him talking about his favourite people and events he has shot photos of in the skateboard community, it will also feature him talking about how he got into shooting skateboard photos and where he wants to progress.

Inspiration for idea:

I have gone on trips all over the uk with Sam to document skateboarding and would like to see how he views it since we both do very similar things. I would also like to see why he does it and who else in the skateboard media world inspires him.

Reserach - unit 22 .2 - handmade portrait

Research – Handmade portrait

Abberican me – The Berrics - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ndOWrWDvB0

This biographical video features Chaz Ortiz a professional skateboarder who talks about how he got into skateboarding and his first and current views on it.

The video follows a linear storyline starting with questions from when he first started and how it happened to what he has been doing lately in his career.

After the first introduction interview the video establishes the location in which he lives (Chicago) using shots which start high up and an eventually get to ground level.

The video is very simple using the expository mode of documentary in which you only see him travelling around the city as he talks to us by the use of voice over.

The music is very simple and calming almost unnoticed to the audience it flow very well with the footage because the majority of it is in slow-motion. I think they used the slow motion to emphasise of each shot more since skateboarding happens so quickly it lets the audience see it in a different light.

The video is particularly aimed towards skateboarders since it is originally only available on [The Berrics.com – a skateboarding media site] although this segment is also aimed towards people who may be interested in skateboarding but do not skateboard themselves.

Beatz: Doug Bordeaux - http://vimeo.com/26657072

This video is about a music producer called Beatz where he talks about how he got into music who his favourite producers are and where he wants his music to progress.

The interview sections have a gold/yellow back drop which help to make the audience feel a particular way towards beatz, the colour gold/yellow represents prestige, power, high quality, intelligence and wisdom. The use of a slight low angle during the interview also make him look more powerful and fearsome.

The music used for this video is music made by the person who is being interviewed [Beatz] this fits the purpose because it connects very much with the interviewee since it's their own creation.

The style and format of questions are very simple and precise into what he specialises in, there are not questions unrelated to what he does this keeps the niche audience interested. Since the audience watching would be musicians, song writers and producers the format of questions will be in a similar way in which their music lives have gone i.e. getting first instrument, how they progress, how they make their music, where they want it to go and who inspires them.

Besides from the interview footage there is also footage of him making music this allows us to see him actually doing what he likes to do not just talking about it and lets the viewer gain their own point of view into the creative hobby.

I also watched alot of related videos which follow the biographical vision of an artist. This is the website in which i watched multiple video for inspiration and ideas. [http://www.iamlosangeles.com/]
